Objective:

The INDOSAT SIGAP (Ready to Respond to Emergencies) Disaster Relief Program for the Nagekeo and Sikka Earthquakes in East Nusa Tenggara aims to help meet the basic needs of communities affected by the earthquake during the emergency response period. This program is implemented through the distribution of food aid, drinking water, hygiene supplies and baby essentials, medicines, evacuation supplies, and free communication services, to support early post-disaster recovery.

Challenges:

  • A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara on August 15, 2026, with its epicenter in the sea approximately 38 km northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, triggering an early tsunami warning. The main challenges addressed through this program include:
  • A large number of displaced residents: 3,356 people in Sikka Regency (1,356 at the Samador Sports Hall and approximately 2,000 self-evacuated at 10 locations) and approximately 500 people in Nagekeo Regency.
  • The impact of the tsunami on the Nagekeo coastal area, with 240 people (80 households) displaced in Marapokot and 703 people (187 households) in Anakoli.
  • Extensive damage to residents’ homes as of August 24, 2026. In Nagekeo, 3,218 homes were severely damaged, 1,598 moderately damaged, and 4,828 slightly damaged, while in Sikka, 990 were severely damaged, 892 moderately damaged, and 2,621 slightly damaged.
  • There is an urgent need for clean water, food supplies, evacuation tents, and communication devices.
  • There is a need for hygiene and baby supplies, medicines, blankets, and mats at the evacuation centers.
  • Due to limited availability of certain types of supplies in the field, some planned items have been replaced with available alternatives.

Solution:

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison collaborated with Filantra through the INDOSAT SIGAP Program to distribute aid via an official handover ceremony at the evacuation centers:

  • Nagekeo, August 24, 2026 (BPBD Main Shelter): 20 5-kg packages of rice, 25 boxes of instant noodles, 25 boxes of 600-ml bottled mineral water, 18 boxes of cookies, 5 boxes of bread, 1 package of medicines, 1 box of feminine hygiene products, 2 boxes of baby diapers, 21 blankets, 21 mats, 50 Indosat/IM3 and Three SIM cards, and 3 Hi-Fi units.

  • The handover of aid was documented in a Handover Report signed by representatives of the BPBD and the command post coordinator

(Documentation of the handover of disaster relief for the Nagekeo and Sikka earthquakes)

Impact:

  • This program helped meet the basic needs of communities affected by the earthquake in Nagekeo and Sikka during the emergency response period, including:
  • Food needs were addressed through 450 packages of ready-to-eat meals and staple foods distributed at three distribution points.
  • Evacuation supplies, such as blankets and mats, were made available at evacuation centers in both regencies.
  • Hygiene, infant care, and basic health needs were met through the provision of sanitary pads, diapers, and medications.
  • Free communication services (SIM cards and Hi-Fi devices) helped affected residents stay connected.
  • The aid was received directly by local government agencies, specifically the Sikka Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Nagekeo Regency Secretariat and residents and BPBD personnel expressed their appreciation through testimonials.
  • This aid eased the burden on communities at evacuation centers and supported the initial post-disaster recovery process.

SDG Relevance:

The INDOSAT SIGAP program contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

SDG 2: Zero Hunger

Through ready-to-eat meals, rice, instant noodles, cookies, bread, and drinking water, this program supports the fulfillment of food and nutritional needs for communities affected by the earthquake during the emergency period amid limited access caused by the disaster.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

By providing drinking water, medicines, hygiene and personal care items, baby supplies, and comfort items in evacuation centers, this program supports the health and well-being of affected communities during the emergency response phase.

Disasters not only cause physical damage but also increase communities’ vulnerability to food shortages, limited access to healthcare, and a lack of basic necessities. Through INDOSAT SIGAP, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, in partnership with Filantra, is providing tangible support to affected communities in Nagekeo and Sikka as part of a joint effort to support disaster response and recovery.
