1,800 Roots of Hope from the Synergy of PGN and Filantra to Green the Future of Indonesia

Partner : PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk

Industry      : Energy

Objective : The planting of 1,800 trees conducted in Jakarta, Jombang, and Sidoarjo aims to support PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk’s commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and environmental sustainability. This program is directed toward contributing to environmental conservation efforts through increased green cover, strengthening ecosystem resilience, and reducing the impacts of climate change. Furthermore, this activity aims to encourage the active participation of the community and stakeholders in maintaining environmental balance, while supporting government programs in sustainable environmental management. Through collaboration with Filantra, PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk also reaffirms its role as a socially responsible energy company committed to providing clean, eco-friendly, and sustainable energy solutions in Indonesia.

Challenges :

In its implementation, the tree planting program as a climate change mitigation effort is inseparable from various challenges that need to be anticipated to achieve optimal sustainability goals. The challenges faced in this activity include:

  • High national carbon emissions, necessitating massive and sustainable carbon sequestration efforts through tree planting.
  • The rate of deforestation and land degradation, which reduces the ecosystem’s carrying capacity to absorb carbon emissions optimally.
  • Declining environmental quality due to ever-increasing human activities.
  • The risk of low plant sustainability without post-planting care and monitoring.
  • Limited community awareness and participation in maintaining and caring for the planted trees.
  • Challenges in ensuring the selection of appropriate locations and plant species to provide long-term ecological impact.

Solutions :  In an effort to address climate change challenges and ensure the sustainability of the tree planting program’s results, PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk implemented a series of planned and measurable solutions. These solutions are designed to ensure that planting activities do not stop at the ceremonial stage but are capable of providing sustainable environmental and social benefits. The solutions applied in this activity include:

  • Planting 1,800 tree seedlings in Jakarta, Jombang, and Sidoarjo, with plant species selection tailored to the characteristics and land requirements of each region.
  • Implementation of systematic activity stages, starting from the seedling handover ceremony, procurement of infrastructure, tree planting, to maintenance and assistance.
  • Intensive post-planting assistance and monitoring, particularly in the Jombang region, through the division of planting zones and the implementation of scheduled maintenance methods.
  • Provision of planting and maintenance facilities to support sustainable plant growth, including fertilizers and other supporting equipment.
  • Active involvement of the community, village officials, schools, and local stakeholders throughout the series of activities to build a sense of shared ownership and responsibility.

Activity Impact : The implementation of the tree planting program by PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk has provided tangible positive impacts, both from environmental and social perspectives, as reflected in the results of field implementation. From the environmental aspect, planting 1,800 trees in Jakarta, Jombang, and Sidoarjo contributes to increasing green cover and strengthening the ecological functions of the land. Monitoring results in the Jombang region up to January 2026 show that 250 planted tree seedlings are growing well, characterized by the appearance of new shoots, increased plant height, healthy leaf conditions, and some plants starting to flower and bear fruit. This indicates that planting and maintenance efforts are effective and have the potential to provide long-term ecological benefits. From the social aspect, this activity encourages the active involvement of the community, village officials, schools, and local stakeholders in the planting and maintenance process. This participation strengthens environmental awareness while fostering a sense of shared responsibility in maintaining the sustainability of the planted trees. Additionally, this program strengthens the image and role of PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk as an energy company committed to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Through collaboration with Filantra and measurable program implementation, this activity serves as a form of the company’s tangible contribution to supporting environmental conservation and ecosystem resilience at the local level.

SDG Relevance :

  • SDG 13 – Climate Action The program to plant 1,800 tree seedlings in Jakarta, Jombang, and Sidoarjo contributes as a climate change mitigation step through carbon dioxide (CO₂) sequestration and improvement of environmental quality around the planting sites.
  • SDG 15 – Life on Land This activity supports the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems through land rehabilitation and strengthening ecological functions, including the prevention of land degradation and support for environmental sustainability for the surrounding community.

Planting Hope, Protecting the Earth

Every tree seedling planted is not just about adding green to the earth, but also about building a healthy ecosystem, absorbing carbon, and maintaining nature’s balance for present and future generations. Through collaboration with Filantra, this program invites companies, communities, and individuals to play an active role in protecting the environment and strengthening ecosystem resilience.

Together with Filantra, we are not just planting trees; we are planting hope creating clean air, strengthening the environment, and providing real benefits to the surrounding community.

Let’s collaborate with Filantra, planting today for a greener earth and a sustainable future.
