PARTNER: PT. Smelting
INDUSTRY: Copper smelting and refining
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the Balik ka Bumi Tourism Village program are as follows:
1. To serve as a model for other tourism development initiatives through the application of eco-tourism principles.
2. To promote responsible tourism practices that support efforts to preserve the natural environment, historical sites, and cultural heritage.
3. To increase community participation and provide economic benefits to the local community.
CHALLENGES:
The “Balik ka Bumi” Tourism Village program focuses on community empowerment activities with an environmental perspective, prioritizing aspects of natural conservation, social, cultural, and economic empowerment of the local community, as well as environmental education and learning. In its implementation, aspects related to environmental guidance and education, conservation, and economics for the community will be a key factor in the program’s success. Therefore, in addition to prioritizing infrastructure and facility improvements, guidance and human resource development—specifically for the community around the implementation site—will be a crucial focus of this program. Some supporting activities for human resource development or capacity building include training in village tourism management, tour guide training, and others.
SOLUTION:
The Balik Ka Bumi Village Tourism Program, initiated by PT Smelting and Filantra, is an effort to empower communities through the development of eco-tourism based on conservation and local creative economy, particularly bamboo and wood crafts. Activities carried out include the formation of working groups (Pokja), entrepreneurship and product innovation training, provision of business capital, institutional strengthening, product promotion, and the development of educational tourism packages. This program not only enhances the capacity and income of the community but also strengthens environmental conservation, local culture, and creates sustainable economic opportunities through cross-sectoral collaboration and a participatory community approach.
IMPACT:
The Balik Ka Bumi Tourism Village Program has had a tangible impact on the communities of Cikahuripan and Muaradua villages, both economically, socially, and environmentally. Economically, the community, particularly bamboo and wood craftsmen, has seen an increase in income and business turnover of at least 25% thanks to training, business capital, and expanded market access, including export opportunities to Japan and Australia. Socially, there has been an increase in human resource capacity through skill training, business management, tour guiding, and digital marketing, fostering local community self-reliance. Environmentally, the program promotes forest conservation and wildlife preservation (such as the Javan Hawk-Eagle), as well as eco-friendly craft production using natural materials.
Let’s actively support local economic empowerment and environmental conservation through the development of eco-friendly tourism villages and crafts in Indonesia.
