When Regions Are Isolated, Aid from the Air Becomes the Pillar of Hope

When Regions Are Isolated, Aid from the Air Becomes the Pillar of Hope

Partner : PT Pertamina Hulu Energi

Industry : Oil and Gas

Objective : This program aims to help flood victims in North Sumatra through the provision of ready-to-consume food assistance and basic logistical needs. This assistance is distributed to meet the urgent needs of affected communities, especially in maintaining food availability and supporting daily activities during the emergency response period.

Challenges :

  • The large number of fatalities, missing persons, and evacuees shows a serious humanitarian impact and requires rapid handling.
  • Damage to houses, public facilities, and vital infrastructure such as roads and bridges caused disruption of access, even making some areas isolated so that evacuation and aid distribution were hampered.
  • Limited food, clean water, sanitation, and medicine at evacuation sites increase the risk of health problems, including diseases caused by the environment and contaminated water.
  • Post-flood conditions that have not fully recovered make affected communities in a vulnerable situation if basic needs and health services are not immediately met.

Solutions :

  • Maintaining the Continuity of Basic Needs during the Emergency Period The flood disaster in North Sumatra caused disruption of community access to food and clean water. In this condition, the main solution implemented was to ensure that the basic needs of survivors remained fulfilled through the provision of logistics that could be consumed or used immediately.
  • Reaching Isolated Areas through Air Distribution The destruction of land infrastructure made several disaster points difficult to reach by land vehicles. To overcome this, aid distribution was carried out using air routes (helicopters) in coordination with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to ensure logistics reached the hands of residents in isolated areas quickly.
  • Prioritizing Health and Protection for Vulnerable Groups The distribution of aid was also directed at meeting the special needs of vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and women. In addition to food, the provision of hygiene kits and basic protection equipment was a priority to maintain the health and safety of survivors at evacuation points.
  • Strengthening Cross-Sector Collaboration in Disaster Response Hand-in-hand with various parties, this program implemented a fast and integrated response to support post-disaster recovery. This synergy between the company and the government was key in accelerating emergency handling and supporting a more sustainable post-disaster recovery process.

Program Impact :

  • Fulfillment of survivors’ basic needs Penyaluran mie instan, air mineral, biskuit, and susu balita helped affected communities meet food and nutritional needs during the evacuation period, so that the risk of hunger and declining health conditions could be suppressed.
  • Maintained health and hygiene of vulnerable groups Assistance of adult diapers, baby diapers, blankets, and towels resulted in increased hygiene, comfort, and health protection for toddlers and the elderly in the post-disaster environment.
  • Rapid and precisely targeted aid access Logistical distribution through coordination with BNPB allowed aid to reach affected areas, including regions that were temporarily isolated, so that the emergency response could be carried out effectively.

SDGs Relevance :

  • SDG 2 – Zero Hunger

Mendukung pemenuhan kebutuhan pangan dan nutrisi bagi masyarakat terdampak bencana untuk mencegah kelaparan dan kekurangan gizi.

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being

Menjaga kesehatan dan kesejahteraan penyintas bencana melalui pemenuhan kebutuhan dasar, khususnya bagi kelompok rentan.
