The Role of PT Pertamina Maintenance & Construction in Handling Sumatra Floods

Partner : PT Pertamina Maintenance & Construction (PertaMC)

Industry : Engineering, Maintenance & Construction (EMC)

Objective : This program is designed to assist communities affected by floods in the Sumatra region through the provision of logistical aid and emergency needs, including food supplies, clean water, and other basic equipment. The implementation of the program is focused on fulfilling the basic needs of disaster victims during the emergency response period, while simultaneously supporting the post-disaster handling and recovery process so that affected communities can return to their activities safely and gradually.

Challenges :

  • Large scale of humanitarian impact The high number of fatalities, missing persons, and evacuees demands rapid handling with high aid requirements.
  • Infrastructure damage and limited access Damage to houses, public facilities, roads, and bridges has caused several areas to be isolated, so that evacuation and aid distribution are hampered.
  • Limited basic needs and health risks Shortages of food, clean water, sanitation, and medicine at evacuation sites increase the community’s vulnerability to post-disaster diseases.

Solutions :

  • Distributing food aid and emergency logistics as a response to the high number of victims and evacuees due to floods and landslides in several regions of Sumatra Island, to ensure the basic needs of affected communities can be met during the emergency response period.
  • Directing aid to support vulnerable groups, such as toddlers, the elderly, and survivors with special needs, so that disaster handling is not only general in nature but also pays attention to the social and health conditions of the affected community.
  • Implementing aid distribution through coordination with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) so that logistical distribution runs in a structured manner, is precisely targeted, and aligns with priority needs in the field.
  • Utilizing air distribution routes as a solution to infrastructure damage and limited land access, so that aid can reach affected areas, including regions that were temporarily isolated.

Program Impact :

  • The availability of food and drinking water assistance helps affected communities meet basic consumption needs while in evacuation, so that the physical condition of survivors can be maintained amidst the emergency situation.
  • Support for hygiene equipment, such as baby diapers, adult diapers, and towels, contributes to the increased hygiene and comfort of vulnerable groups and helps suppress the risk of post-disaster health disorders.
  • Coordinated aid distribution allows logistics to be received by the community more quickly and evenly, including in areas with limited access, so that emergency handling responses can run more effectively.
  • The presence of the company through these humanitarian activities strengthens social solidarity and provides real support for affected communities in facing difficult times as well as the initial post-disaster recovery process.

SDGs Relevance

  • SDGs Goal 2: Zero Hunger The Pertamina Peduli “Serving with All Our Heart” program contributes to maintaining food availability for communities affected by floods and landslides through the provision of food and drinking water assistance. This effort helps prevent food insecurity and supports the fulfillment of the basic needs of survivors during the emergency response period.
  • SDGs Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being This program supports the health and well-being of affected communities by providing hygiene equipment and basic protection. The assistance plays a role in maintaining personal hygiene, suppressing post-disaster disease risks, and protecting vulnerable groups such as toddlers and the elderly.

Hope That Keeps Shining

At a time when disaster changes many things, concern is present as a support for life. This program becomes a space for sharing hope, helping affected communities survive, recover, and slowly reorganize their daily lives. From simple steps, strength grows to continue life in a safer, healthier, and more meaningful way.

Moving forward, recovery requires more than just momentary assistance. Cross-party collaboration is needed so that these efforts can reach wider and more sustainably. Filantra opens space for cooperation for partners who want to walk together, strengthening recovery, and lighting hope in more places.
