PARTNER: PT Smelting
INDUSTRY: Copper smelting and refining
OBJECTIVE: To introduce Japanese language and culture to students, as well as to enhance students’ knowledge
and skills in using the Japanese language.
CHALLENGES:
The foreign language proficiency of the Indonesian population is currently considered to be low. The ability to communicate in foreign languages, which is increasingly needed, has not been adequately developed through school education. Learning foreign languages is recommended to begin at an early age. This will be highly beneficial for children, as language is a tool for communication, and children are more easily able to absorb spoken words. Japanese is considered one of the most difficult languages in the world. If children master Japanese, they will find it easier to learn other foreign languages.
SOLUTION:
The Japanese Language Training Activity “Issho ni benkyō shimashou!” was conducted by showing Japanese language videos and presenting material on Japanese culture and language, followed by students practicing writing Kanji and Hiragana characters. At the end of the learning activity, a quiz (in the form of questions and answers) was held, and the 10 winning students received school bags as prizes.
Each student also receives a Participants Gift package, consisting of 40 sets containing Japanese books, pencils, pens, erasers, pencil cases, and notebooks, aimed at assisting students in meeting their school needs for the first semester’s learning activities. The 11 Japanese Learning Books donated by PT. Smelting to the school library of SDN Sumurwelut I/438 Surabaya represent support for the implementation of quality education in Indonesia.
IMPACT:
The Japanese Language Training Program “Issho ni benkyō shimashou!” aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education.
This type of Japanese language training assistance program is a concrete action toward achieving quality education by providing Japanese language skills and introducing Japanese culture to the students of SDN Sumurwelut I/438 Surabaya. This assistance is expected to enhance students’ knowledge in using the Japanese language and foster their interest and skills in learning Japanese.
Thus, the Japanese Language Training Program “Issho ni benkyō shimashou!” is a concrete manifestation of supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education) in preparing outstanding future generations who can face the challenges of globalization in the coming years.
