Creativity and Literacy House Program in Waupnor Village

Partner: PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Subholding Commercial & Trading Regional Papua Maluku

Industry: Energy & Petroleum

Objective: This program aims to effectively improve reading, writing, and arithmetic (calistung) skills among elementary school children. Additionally, it encourages the development of organizational skills through creative and enjoyable activities for children. The program also focuses on strengthening inter-institutional networks in Waupnor ward for integrated handling of children’s social issues. All efforts are directed at optimizing literacy as an essential foundation for children’s educational and social development.

Challenges:

Literacy Class Challenges

  • Lower elementary students (grades 2-4) still require more intensive guidance.
  • Rainy conditions cause a decline in participant attendance.
  • Participant data needs updating for more focused mentoring and to reduce participant turnover.
  • Technology-based learning requires the availability of technological media to boost motivation and interest.

Creativity Class Challenges

  • Coordination between tutors and participants needs improvement for activities to run as planned.
  • Tutor responsibilities are not yet optimal; 1-2 tutors should focus on creativity while others focus on literacy.
  • Activity schedules often conflict with church events, requiring time adjustments to avoid disruptions.
  • Unfavorable weather affects participant attendance.

Solutions:

  • Socialization and Discussion on Program Development Planning
An initial important step to ensure all stakeholders understand the goals, stages, and roles in program implementation. By opening dialogue, the program can be designed based on the community’s real needs and gain broad support from the community and stakeholders.
  • Guidance for Literacy and Creativity Classes for Children
Serves as an interactive learning medium encouraging children’s creativity and literacy skills. Through directed facilitation, children are actively involved in creative activities while improving reading, writing, and creative expression abilities. This is expected to nurture a literate generation capable of contributing to cultural and intellectual community development.
  • Family Resilience Support
Acts as a solution to strengthen family foundations facing social and economic challenges. The program provides guidance and education on family management skills, effective communication, and family members’ potential development to create a conducive home environment for children’s growth and family welfare.
  • Literacy Competitions and Cultural Arts Performances
Provides appreciation and motivation for participants to showcase their creativity. These activities not only increase interest and enthusiasm for literacy but also strengthen local cultural identity and improve intergenerational and community relations. Through competitions and art performances, the program fosters self-confidence and pride in their own culture.

Impact:

  • The program improves the quality of education for early childhood and elementary school children through mentoring in reading, writing, arithmetic (calistung), and social education to prevent children from negative influences.
  • There is an increase in students’ abilities to read, write, and analyze texts in literacy classes. For example, a grade 5 student who previously did not recognize letters is now reading fluently.
  • The program creates a safe, enjoyable, and supportive learning environment for intellectual and character development.

SDG Relevance:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education: This children’s literacy and creativity program supports SDG 4 by fostering a reading interest, improving literacy, and ensuring inclusive and quality education for all children in Waupnor Village.
